AZENHAS DO MAR

This delightful coastal village is one of the most photographed in Portugal. It's entanglement of cobbled streets lined with white washed houses clings to the cliff over looking the Atlantic. Azenhas do Mar makes a great retreat from the hustle and bustle of Lisbon and the armies of tourists in Sintra. The town offers the visitor amazing views over the rocky coastline as well as a wonderful sandy beach. Below the cliffs there's a swimming pool hewn out of the rocks over looked by the Azenhas do Mar restaurant perched on it's terrace. In the old town there's still a few traditional buildings which adds a quaint charm to this quiet little village. The village once made it's fortune by harnessing the power of the sea by the use of sea-powered water mills (Azenha), and today one can still see the original mill stones lining the streets.

Azenhas do Mar

South of the town is the Miradoura das Azenhas do Mar viewpoint which offers a postcard view over the village. Afternoon is the best time to visit as sea mist is a common occurence in the mornings. If you decide to take lunch or to use Azenhas do Mar as your holiday base you'll find the prices here cheaper than in Lisbon or Sintra and the local welcome very friendly.
